Gifts for Kids
As a blogger I’ve been having trouble figuring out what to get for my nephew. He’s a such an energetic 5 year old kid that he doesn’t seem to be obsessed with one thing for too long. There’s also age appropriateness. Grand Theft Auto 5? Way too violent for a 5 year. Heck, I’m in my thirties and it’s too violent for me. That game makes Quentin Tarnantino blush.
Needless to say, after spending a couple days with him, I’m starting to figure out what 5 year olds seem to love.
It’s a game! It’s a toy line! It’s…both! If you’re over 12, chances are you’ve never heard of Skylanders. If you’re under 12, it’s likely all you hear about. It’s a video game that you can play, but it’s also a toy line. When you buy a toy, you connect it to the game and can play as that character. Each character/toy has stats that get better the more you play it. It’s basically an endless money making machine. And you know what? It works. Amazingly well.

Best American Coffees
By and large most of the coffee consumed by Americans is imported from other countries. The practice is so common place that nowadays we try to purchase organic and fair trade coffee so that we don’t support that abuse this immensely profitable industry. But did you know that there are some coffee growing regions that are right here in North America?
Not only that, but some of these coffee growing regions have been winning internationally renowned coffee competitions. How about them apples?
1. Kona Coffee
All coffee that is considered kona coffee is grown on the west side of the Big Island of Hawaii. It’s a relatively small stretch of land, only 2 miles long, and consists of 600 mostly independent coffee farmers. Production wise, the region is too small to supply coffee to a large chain like Starbucks, and the price of this coffee tends to be prohibitive. $30-$40 for 1 pound of coffee is the average going rate. The growing/processing techniques tend to vary from farm to farm as well, so a cup of kona coffee from one farm can taste very different from another farm.
Still, kona coffee from farms like Koa, Hula Daddy and Kona Joe have grown in reputation and popularity in the past few years. It’s not unusual to find their coffees sold out on their website.
Confused about which kona coffee to try? The folks over at Kona Coffee Buzz has created this handy guide to help you figure out which coffee is right for you:
2. Ka’u Coffee
Just south of the kona coffee belt lies the region of Ka’u. The land in the Ka’u district has been used primarily for sugar plantations in the last century, but the collapse of that industry in the 1980′s has led the district to start growing coffee. Coffee grown in the Ka’u district is every bit as good as kona coffee, however the name doesn’t have the same reputation just yet. Like champagne or Scotch, the ‘kona’ in kona coffee refers to the location it’s been grown in and cannot be used by coffee grown in other Hawaiian regions.
